Task 9: (In)elastic impact

Topic

The pupils are to compare which balls bounce the highest (if they are dropped from the same height).

The conservation of energy and pulse laws apply, whereby the elasticity e can be calculated using the equations for conservation of energy.

Phyphox offers the possibility of quantifying the results with the aid of time measurement between the individual impact times of the balls. Further evaluations are not possible.

Learning objectives

The pupils

  • recognise that different materials lead to different bounce heights.
  • apply the conservation of energy law to calculate the elasticity.

Time required

The experiment can be carried out in about 10min since no further evaluation is done.
